Earth Day 2013

April 27, 2013
Oak Ridge Civic Center and Bissell Park
11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

A HUGE thank you to everyone who made Earth Day 2012 possible!  It was a resounding success, thanks to our generous sponsors, volunteers, coordinators, exhibitors and vendors.  This event is volunteer-led, and funded by generous donations from businesses and individuals.

If you are interested in being a part of next year’s event, please let us know by emailing johnstonbron@bellsouth.net .

One of our main goals is to give back to the community in tangible, sustainable ways.  Here are some encouraging figures from Earth Day 2012:

  • We recycled or composted 72% of the 370 lbs of festival solid waste generated.
  • At least 60 area businesses, clubs, and organizations participated in the festival and its events and were able to educate the public to make sustainable, healthy lifestyle choices.
  • At least 5000 people attended the festival events over the weekend.
  • At the Erase Your Trace Recycling Extravaganza, 199 carloads were processed, resulting in 5,700 lbs of electronics for sustainable recycling, 600 lbs of books for the library, 93 eyeglasses for Kiwanis, 5000 pairs of shoes for Soles4Souls, 3500 pounds of paper for shredding , and 170 pounds of batteries and lightbulbs.    (Medicine collection was conducted simultaneously by the Oak Ridge Police Department at their headquarters. 200 participants turned in 116 pounds of meds including 8 pounds of controlled substances.)
  • At the The Green Mile kids’ run, over 100 kids participated, making a statement for active play and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • The Children’s Scavenger Hunt reached 250 children and incorporated educational and active exhibits encouraging sustainable and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • In partnership with Anderson County Public Health and Knoxville Regional Bicycle Program, the Bike Rodeo reached over 200 children, providing them with helmets and detailed safety instruction.
You won’t believe all the great things that went on this year!
